We taught the kids to scan things they use up so they get added to the list, and that seems to be working well. Overall, we are using it more than I really expected and it has quickly become an easy part of our routine.

GroceryBee reads barcodes the way every scanner does — with a small image sensor. Here is exactly what happens to what it sees.
Nothing leaves the device but text.
The scanner module decodes the barcode inside its own hardware and hands our board a line of characters. It has no way to send an image anywhere. We never receive a picture of your kitchen, because the device cannot make one.
It only looks when you press the button.
No motion sensing. No always-on. Press the button and the red aiming light comes on. When the light is off, the sensor is off — there is no silent mode, and we won't add one.
No microphone.
There isn't one in it. It cannot hear anything.
It doesn't know where it is.
No GPS. We never receive your Wi-Fi network name, your router's address, or anything else that would put you on a map. Your Wi-Fi password never leaves the device.

Do I need the device, or can I just use my phone?
The app is how you shop the list — sorted and ready when you're at the store. The device is how the list gets built. And building it is the hard part: opening an app to log a single empty jar is more effort than the moment deserves, so it never happens and the list stays incomplete. GroceryBee makes it a one-second scan on the way to the bin — no phone, no unlocking, no typing. That's also why anyone in the house can keep the list going, phone or not.
Is there a subscription?
No — everything GroceryBee does today is included in the purchase: scanning, your shopping list, and full access for everyone in your household, with no recurring fee. Down the road we may offer optional premium services for people who want more from their kitchen, but they'll always be exactly that — optional. What you're buying here keeps working, in full, subscription-free.
What's the difference between the packs?
Just how many devices are in the box — one or two. The two-pack brings the per-device price down a little. One is plenty for most kitchens; the two-pack is for larger homes that want a second scanner.
